What's Wrong With Congress Today: Part Three: Misinformation

Part of what makes Congress so important as a national lawmaking body is the honest and passionate debate that takes place on Capitol Hill over views, policy, and political philosophy. It is these disagreements, these inconsistencies, that make America the nation that it is, full of differing and unique opinions, and debate like this is paramount to the success of our country. However, it is impossible for these discussions to take place if the members of Congress and American voters do not agree upon the basic facts behind any one issue.
You can't argue with someone if you and they are not arguing from the same set of facts. And yet, that seems to be exactly what is happening in Congress. To some, the stimulus bill provided thousands of jobs, while others insist that not a single job was created or saved. When talking to press or to constituants, some congressmen say that President Obama raised taxes, but Obama and the Democrats say that, for 95% of Americans, taxes were cut.
If constituants do not receive consistant and truthful information from their Congressional representation, there is no way that Americans will be able to elect congressmen on the merits of their opinions.  As each party pushes its own set of facts forward, honest debate in America begins to die. It is the responsibility of elected officials to provide and the responsibility of Americans to demand honesty, for, without it, Congress will no longer be able to create meaningful and useful legislation that grows from honest discourse.
